Milimeter wave location-aware communication systems for the fifth generation of mobile communication

The fifth generation of mobile communication (5G) is being designed with a trend towards using millimetre frequency bands (mmWave) with a large number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver.  Due to its low scattering and reflective nature, mmWave channels are spatially sparse with communication occurring via only a few propagation paths. This sparsity along with the high propagation loss make the use of omni-directional transmission infeasible in mmWave band. Thus, spatial discrimination using beamforming is more favourable, but requires some knowledge about the device location. Studies have already shown that 5G localisation has the potential to provide a position accuracy in the order of centimetres, making high-accuracy location-aware applications even more attractive. This high-accuracy, in turn, requires a reliable communication link. Hence, it can be seen that the design of localisation strategies and the optimisation of communication systems should be achieved jointly in 5G. In this project, the PhD student will look into 5G location-aware communication systems and investigate and design possible transmission and reception strategies that integrate location estimation schemes with communication system design. This may include, for example, effective beamforming, accurate localisation solutions, efficient coding/decoding schemes, or protocol development.
