Objectives:

Researchers have documented women's unequal position in the workplace and labour market over the last four decades. Solutions have been proposed, yet discrimination and gendered workplace and cultural norms remain largely intact, limiting opportunities for many women. Theories abound on how to achieve gender equality in the workplace, shifting from a focus on how to explain the differences between male and female employees, to a renewed concentration on how to increase the numbers of women in senior management.

Unravelling the issues around gendered workplaces is complex and involves examining work and family issues, discrimination and affirmative action, gender pay inequity and the list goes on. New theoretical and practical approaches are needed to understand gender inequality, leading to different ways of working which benefit both women and men.
