Dr. Zhang is an Associate Professor in School of Engineering and Information Technology in the University of New South Wales, Canberra. She gained intensive research experience as a postdoctoral research fellow in UNSW, the University of Queensland of Australia, Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea after completing her PhD in the University of Hong Kong in 2001. She obtained her Bachelor degree and Master degree in Engineering Mechanics from Tianjin University, China in 1992 and 1995. She was awarded the Postgraduate certificate for Higher Education by the University of New South Wales in 2007.

Dr. Zhang’s main research areas are Composite materials and structures including high performance construction and building materials and green construction and building materials, numerical methods and modelling, and structural behaviour under extreme loadings including impact and blast. She has strong expertise on computer simulation and numerical modelling of engineering structures in various engineering areas in particularly under extreme loadings such as fire, impact and blast. Till Jan. 2019, she has published over 220 scholarly peer-reviewed research papers including over 80 papers in the top leading International journals. She has supervised 10 PhD students and one Master by Research student to completion.  Currently she works on an ARC DP project on numerical analysis and optimisation of composite  laminates with thermal dimensional stability and a defence funded research project on high performance nanocomposite adhesive materials. She has also been working on ARC project to develop green and environmental friendly Magnesium Oxychloride cement under the ARC research hub.
