The school of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) conducts teaching and research in aviation technology. Our fully accredited undergraduate degree in Aviation Technology is offered to military officer cadets who will be assigned to Aviation specializations in Navy, Army and Air Force. These specializations include, but are not limited to: pilots, air traffic controllers, air combat officers, observers and air defence personnel. The Aviation Program covers topics such as Aviation Technology, aviation safety, Computer Games, Fundamentals of Flight, Aircraft Systems, Air Traffic Management, Airport Operations and Systems, Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, Aviation Safety Management Systems and Aircraft Systems and Design. We currently offer a Bachelor of Technology in Aviation and an Aviation major for the Bachelor of science.
SEIT aviation research interests include air traffic simulation and optimisation, advanced air traffic management (ATM) concepts investigation, aviation environmental impact evaluation, and human factors study. We have developed cutting-edge methodologies for improving the future ATM concepts, such as dynamic airspace sectorization and 4D flight trajectory optimisation. In cooperation with industry partners, we have designed and developed several innovative analysis tools for evaluating air traffic performance and aviation environmental impact.
Human factors study is another key research area of our aviation researchers. Integrated with the traditional methodologies, the group has adopted cognitive engineering for a better understanding of human psychological and physiological states in the aviation context. Cognitive engineering applies Machine Learning techniques to synthesise the multi-modal data from various devices, such as electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and Electromyography (EMG), for obtaining reliable and accurate human states. Pilots’ non-technical skills performance and system evaluation is also an area of research that has evolved to the development of an applied methodology that is currently being trialled in military aircraft operations.
