Engineers Australia recently reported that Australia is heading for a critical shortage of engineers. Despite this we are not yet utilising our local talent pool:

  • Less than 1 in 4 of Australian engineering researchers are women.
  • Less than 1 in 6 of Australian inventors are women.
  • 1 in 4 girls are choosing not to study mathematics in their last year of high school.

Increasing the number of women studying engineering will not only help to address Australia’s shortage of engineers, but will produce more diverse, innovative and exciting solutions to our country’s engineering challenges.

The YoWIE program aims to show young women in years 9 and 10 that a career in engineering is fun, exciting, and fulfilling. Participants will spend three days experiencing the different engineering disciplines, meeting successful female engineers, and seeing the kind of career that studying maths and science through high school and college can get you.
