Canberra's brightest Year 8 and 9 female mathematics students were rewarded for their hard work today at the University of New South Wales Canberra.

The 54 girls, representing 27 schools, were the top performing female maths student in their school year in 2017. A further 108 students were recognised for placing second and third in their year.

The inaugural UNSW Canberra Prize for Best Female Student in Mathematics was launched to encourage young women to pursue studies and a career in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The University of New South Wales Canberra celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday night with a spectacular event at Parliament House.

About 600 people attended the anniversary dinner, including alumni, past and present staff and the ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr.

The anniversary year began in July when the university marked the signing of the 1967 agreement between UNSW and Defence to provide tertiary education to military cadets.

CANBERRA TIMES: When Tom Frame graduated from UNSW Canberra with a PhD 25 years ago, he questioned why his mother wanted to buy him a graduation gown, certain it would get one wear. But in "an unexpected blessing of a magnitude you really don't have an entitlement to hope for", the historian's 28-year-old daughter, Kelly, will graduate from UNSW Canberra with a PhD in English on Wednesday while wearing his robes.

The University of New South Wales Canberra (UNSW Canberra) will be awarding an honorary doctorate to the late Major General Michael Clifford AM CSC at today’s degree conferral ceremony.

The University Council, noting the Major General’s eminent service to the community, resolved that it would be fitting if the degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa - the university’s highest honour - were to

be conferred on Major General Clifford.

At the time of his death, Major General Clifford was the senior advisor to the UNSW Canberra Rector Professor Michael Frater.
