Description of work:

We are offering at least two PhD projects as part of an Australian Research Council Discovery project titled “Behaviour Bootstrapping for Ad Hoc, Heterogeneous Robot Swarms.” This project will develop algorithms to permit heterogeneous groups of robots to self-generate, self-evaluate and use swarming behaviours adapted to their physical properties and environment. It will do this by extending the developmental robotics paradigm to large groups of agents. The outcomes will include new algorithms for developmental robotic swarms and robotics architectures for the use of these algorithms in transport and inspection tasks for future smart cities, smart farming or defence. In the project, the PhD students will help design and evaluate evolutionary developmental frameworks for swarms including the design of value systems for these frameworks. They will also have the opportunity to work with swarms of real robots in an indoor motion capture environment.
