Scope and Content

This collection consists of working material for the anthology A Sea Change: Australian Writing and Photography (1998) which was compiled and edited by Adam Shoemaker. The anthology, which explores the themes of transformation, was published by the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games to provide a snapshot of contemporary Australian art and literature. The material includes correspondence, versions of the literary and photographic contributions, business matters, and drafts of the collated anthology. Contributors include David Malouf, Lily Brett, Robert Drewe, Beth Yahp, Robert Dessaix, Tracey Moffatt, Anne Zhalka, and William Yang.

The folders themselves appear to be colour-coded for content. A note in Folder 65 possibly indicates the following pattern:

Biographical Note

Adam Shoemaker was born in Canada, 1957. He came to Australia in the 1980s after receiving an Honours Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University, Canada. His award-winning doctoral research on Aboriginal literature at the Australian National University, Black Words, White Page, was first published in 1989.

Shoemaker has held a succession of public and academic positions since then, including Professor and Dean of Arts at the Australian National University, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President at Monash University. In 2016, he was appointed Vice Chancellor of Southern Cross University.

Shoemaker founded the Oxfam-Monash Partnership and co-founded the Monash-World Vision Alliance. He has focused much energy on projects in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, including publishing material on digital education, cultural studies. He has written or edited nine books in the field of Australian Indigenous literature and culture.

While teaching Australian Studies at the Queensland University of Technology in the mid-1990s, Shoemaker served as the Chair of the Brisbane Writers Festival. During this time, he edited the anthology A Sea Change: Australian Writing and Photography. The work was commissioned by the Olympic Arts Festivals of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games with the aim of providing a ‘snapshot’ of Australian culture in the late twentieth century.
