Biographical Note

Wikipedia article:

Anglo-Dutch physicist. Born at Oosterwolde, Netherlands in 1919, Dirk ter Haar attained his doctorate from the University of Leiden (1948) on the origins of the solar system.  After post-doctoral research in Denmark and the United States, ter Haar became Reader in theoretical physics and Fellow of Magdalen College, University of Oxford, where he remained until retirement in 1986.  At Oxford ter Haar was a committed teacher of graduates and undergraduates, and Anthony Leggett (Nobel laureate in Physics, 2003) and Deng Jiaxian (Chinese nuclear physicist) number amongst his notable students.  Ter Haar was also an energetic editor and linguist, translating several seminal works into English, his knowledge of Russian providing him with access to Soviet scientific advances ahead of his colleagues in the West.
