This collection comprises material relating to Lieutenant General John Sanderson's mission in Cambodia, when he was seconded to the Secretary of the United Nations to complete planning for the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). In addition to papers covering the secondment (February 1992-October 1993), there is some earlier background material, as well as some reports of a later date. These records include press briefings, correspondence, cables and telegrams, situation reports, local propaganda and underground literature, minutes of meetings, incident reports and political statements by members of the Australian government and several overseas governments. Also included is one box of documentary video footage dealing with various aspects of the local Cambodian situation

John Murray Sanderson was born in 1940 in Geraldton, Western Australia. He attended the Royal Military College, Duntroon before being commissioned as Lieutenant, Royal Australian Engineers on 13 December 1961. Sanderson's early career involved regimental postings, military training and construction in locations such as Malaysia, England and Vietnam.
Rising through the ranks, in 1989 Sanderson served as Chief of Staff, Land Command before being promoted to Major General and appointed as Assistant Chief of Defence Policy. At the end of that year he was appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Force Development.
In October 1991 Sanderson became advisor to the Secretary General in planning for the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia, and then as the authority's military commander with the rank of Lieutenant General. At the end of this posting, in October 1993, Sanderson was appointed as the first Commander Joint Forces Australia, then Chief of the General Staff in June 1995 (titled changed to Chief of Army in June 1997)
Sanderson served as Governor of Western Australia, 2000-2005. In 2006, the Western Australian government appointed Sanderson to the position of Special Adviser on Indigenous Affairs.
