Dr John Reeve

Dr John Reeve was educated at Melbourne University (BA Hons, MA) and Pembroke College, Cambridge University (PhD), and taught for thirty years at the University of Hong Kong, Sydney University, and UNSW Canberra as Senior Lecturer and Osborne Fellow in Naval History (1997-2017) before retiring and being appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer in 2018. He was Visiting Fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge University, in 2010 and 2014-15, and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies. He specializes in diplomatic, naval and strategic history and contemporary maritime strategic affairs, has published more than thirty refereed journal articles, book chapters, and working papers, and has authored or co-edited five books including Charles I and the Road to Personal Rule (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge,1989) and (co-edited with David Stevens), The Face of Naval Battle: The Human Experience of Modern War at Sea (Allen and Unwin, Sydney, 2003). He served as an Associate Editor of and multiple contributor to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (British Academy/Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2004). His current projects include a book chapter on the Australian Chiefs of Naval Staff, a volume of essays on naval history and maritime strategy, and a book on early modern European international relations and warfare: England's Rise to Power: Diplomacy and Warfare 1600-1700.
