The Howard Library

On 4 December 2018, The Howard Library was officially opened by Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Daryl Karp, Director of the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD), says the Museum is “delighted to share the spiritual home of Australian democracy, Old Parliament House, with the Howard Library.”

The Library contains a collection of John Howard’s personal papers and memorabilia (JHL 001) from his time as Prime Minister (March 1996–December 2007), as well as the personal archives of several of Howard’s cabinet.

The Howard Library is a gallery space with an exhibition of objects exploring the main issues and events associated with the successive Howard Governments. This includes the Prime Minister’s desk, APEC costumes, advertising from both sides of politics, gifts from world leaders, and one of his tracksuits.

The manuscript collections can be accessed through Special Collections by searching the Finding Aid Index.
